Canmore take 2

August 14, 2013
On Wednesday of last week Kelly had the day off so we decided to take advantage of the sunshine and try Grassi Lakes again!
The weather was great! We made it to the top and hung out for a while enjoying the beautiful blue-green lakes and the waterfall!
Hunter did really well! He slept the entire way up and down but was awake at the top so it worked out perfectly!
He lakes were freezing as inviting as they were but glacier fed lakes never warm up no matter how hot it is in the summer. They are beautiful to look at though!

Kobi loved swimming despite how cold it was! He is a brave doggy!

The waterfall on the way up. Since the floods the waterfall has grown to be three times what it normally was before the floods happened! Crazy what Mother Nature can do!

When we got back down we went back to the same pub "The Woods" we went to the weekend before and enjoyed a good beer and some wings before heading out to my birthday supper. My birthday wasn't Wednesday but Thursday. Because Hunter and I are going to Vancouver Island on Saturday and we are picking up my mom for the drive out at the airport on Friday and busy work schedules didn't work for my actual birthday we were celebrating it that Wednesday night!

Kobi was tuckered out!

Lake, Canmore and Family!

On Friday Hunter, Kobi and I went up to my friends cabin for the day on Gull Lake. It was kind of a overcast day so it was super relaxing just to enjoy the indoors. Hunter got to spend lots of quality time with his aunties Nicole and Kayla and lots of love from a good friend Jacinda! We went for a walk, time flew by we has no idea we were gone as long as we were! It was great!

Then, on Saturday Kelly had the day off so we went to Canmore for the day! It started out beautifully! We went to Grassi Lakes for a little hike but about half way up we had to turn around because it started pouring from out of no where.:( But, we made the most of it and went to a local pub "The Wood."
They had amazing food and a good beer!  Both Kelly and I had the salmon burger,so  good!! It stopped raining by the time we got there (of course, that's always what happens) so we sat out on the patio which has a spectacular view of the mountains. :)

On Sunday, we met up with Kelly's parents to have some lunch and they had our nephew Beckett with them. Beckett loves his Papa and Hunter so we got a great shot of the three of them. It was super cute! After lunch we went back to Kelly's parents house and hung out. Alex (Kelly's dad) had a kite so he got that out and Beckett and him flew it for a little while. It hit a tree and Kelly went to the rescue to get it out! Over all this weekend was great! Had good company and good food! What more can you ask for!

Before and After Hunter's Surgery

Quite the transformation! The swelling has gone down quite considerably in the last few days. Hunter had his follow up with the doctor on Tuesday and he was very impressed with Hunters lip and how it was healing. There are still are a few dissolvable stitches that are in his lip but it's amazing the job they can do!
I am definitely getting used to his new lip.  It still throws me for a loop early in the morning when I go to feed him. It's like I have a new baby.

Hunter's Cleft Lip Surgery

July 29, 2013
My sweet baby boy went through his first surgery today, his cleft lip repair. I’m not really sure how to fully explain the day so I apologize if this post is a little disorganized. I am going to write this from my perspective I want people to understand from a mom’s perspective what is felt. My baby boy is a fighter and a trooper and showed so much bravery in his early age that I knew he would get through the surgery with flying colours; and that he did. From conception he was a fighter, we thought we were going to loose him but we didn’t. He is strong and healthy.
(A couple days before surgery)

(Just before his surgery with his dad Kelly)
Hunter is now 4 ½ months old and I can tell you that I was really not looking forward to this surgery. Not necessarily because it was a surgery (that is part of it though, of course) but because I have spent these last 4 ½ months with my baby boy knowing that he was perfect in every way. I have spent the last week and a half really grieving with the fact that his smile will be very different. I love his clefty smile. I believe it gives him so much character and I wouldn’t, if it were my way and society wouldn’t later in his life play a big role in how he looks, change it for the world. But, because I know HE would want it later and that society is very highly geared toward appearance and acceptance that this surgery is indeed necessary.

(Post-op saddest face in the whole world but doing so good!)
This was very hard for me to deal with. I know a lot of people won’t really fully understand what I mean by this but I really bonded with him and his little cleft.
Driving to the hospital was so hard. When we woke up he was so happy even though he had been fasting since midnight he still had a glowing smile. We were playing in bed just before we had to leave and it was the toughest thing to put him in his car seat and drive to the hospital knowing he has no idea what is in store for him that day and I felt there was nothing wrong with him. I am putting him through this pain when nothing hurts to begin with. It was hard.
When we got to the hospital at 9:15am, they admitted us and we waited in pre-op for 2 hours before his surgery time 11:15. Well by this time Hunter was so hungry. He was very mad. It was almost 12 hours since he ate last and that was major. They transferred us to another room, which was just outside of the operating room they were going to be at. Before I knew it, the surgeon was talking to us and the anesthesiologist was explaining and he was gone. It was so fast that I couldn’t cry. My emotions didn’t even realize what happened.
We went into the parent lounge and waited with our buzzer for 3 hours. Thankfully my husband was smart and brought cards. Kelly, Kelly’s mom and myself played hand and foot the entire time until Hunter was in recovery.
When Hunter was in recovery he was very, very upset. They were trying as fast as possible to get his pain managed and so he was comfortable. The poor boy was without food for ¾ of a day. He was hungry. We gave him some glucose water in recovery and he ate a lot of it. He didn’t care what it was he just wanted something in his tummy. When I first saw Hunter he was upset and I just cried. I cried because he was in pain, I would have done anything for him and wished it was me to undergo the surgery. Not him. I cried because he looked so different and I was used to my baby the way he was before. It has definitely been something to get used to. He just looks so drastically different. He looks great and the surgeon did an amazing job, but it was still really different. Even his cry was different.
Once we got out of recovery we were transferred upstairs were he would stay in the hospital for the remainder of the visit.

(with grandma)
He was super happy just to be held and fed. So that is what we did. Held and fed him as needed, for the rest of the day and most of the night. He slept lots, ate TONNES (which was great) and cried very little surprisingly. The doctors and nurses were very happy with his progress and his appetite! He even through the night gave us a few smiles, new ones that were so cute and that was a relief to see. He was happy and comfortable enough to smile!

Day 2:
Was considerably better, it is truly amazing how resilient children are. I never understood what other parents said when they said that but it is so true! Within hours I was starting to see the amazing little boy I knew just before his surgery. That was a relief

As I am writing they are considering discharging him tomorrow!! Amazing! I totally thought he would be here longer but because his appetite is so great and his pain is managed really well, he might get to go home. He just needs to be able to be off morphine and IBprophen or Tylenol. They don’t want him to leave needing both of them just one. So we will see. If he has to stay another day though I’m not too worried. All I want is for him to be happy and healthy and not in any pain what so ever. He has been playing with his toys and standing all day. It is feeling like an almost normal day Unbelievable how fast they recover!

Day 3:

We are going home!!!! They took the retainer out of his nose, I signed the documents and we were free to leave!! The coolest part...one of the doctors that was in the area of the hospital where we were staying at the Children's was Hunters NICU doctor at the RockyView Hospital! She was able to see him and she said it is so neat to see him now! She said its so cool to see babies that were treated so long ago and how they are doing currently. It was really cool!

Summer fun in the sun!!!

Lately, the weather has been absolutely gorgeous here in Calgary! We have been going on lots of walks and just soaking up the sun. One thing we know in Calgary is it doesn't last very long so we have to take advantage of it while we can.
This past Thursday we went to my friend Nicole's cabin up in Gull Lake. We went on the dock and we went boating. It was great! Hunter dipped his little toes into lake water for the very first time and actually liked it! I was shocked! We were all prepared for a good scream but he was pretty content! He loved the boat ride too. He thought the jerky movements were just great; giving us really good smiles while it went.
Cute Lifejacket!

Kobi had fun with his bestie too Roxy (Nicole's Black Lab)

Then, today My friend Vickie came over. We went for a really nice walk around my developing neighborhood and then just lounged on my front lawn with Hunter and Kobi. It was so hot out on our walk I had to strip Hunter down to his diaper, as you can see he was quite happy about that!

Kobi is such a good big brother to Hunter, he was kissing him so much hence the look on Hunters face :)

Cloth Diapering!

I get this a lot, and that is, "Im brave" for doing cloth diapers. It really isn't that hard or as scary as people may think it is. I use diapers called "g diapers." They are a hybrid diaper that uses both disposable liners and cloth. When we are at home we use the cloth inserts and when out and about we us the disposable. They are super eco-friendly and easy on Hunters bum. The disposable liners you can compost, throw out, or flush down the toilet. They have no chemicals in them and degrade in 50-100 days:) I use a wet bag for the cloth which I then just throw into the wash and if needed bleach in the sun to get rid of the stains. The sun is amazing!!! Plus, he has a really cute bum in these diapers!!

Baths!

Hunter at the beginning hated baths! It would take everything in us to get it done fast because he just screamed the entire time! The picture below is at the NICU I held the pacifier in his mouth while the nurse finished bathing him. He can't keep pacifiers in his mouth on his own because of his cleft. He is so red because of all the screaming that was going on.
But then at 2 months we had a turning point! He started really liking them. It is so precious to see him happy in the tub. If he is upset I put him in the bath and he stops crying its awesome!

Hunter at 3 months.
